A LOCAL student swapped the streets of Oldham for the Great Wall of China as he learnt more about the fastest growing economy in the world.

Mofozzul Choudhury, who is doing a business management and administration degree at University Campus Oldham, recently immersed himself in Oriental culture after beating 2,000 other students to win a place on Study China.

Founded in 2007, Study China is a government-funded initiative which encourages UK students to study abroad, developing skills and awareness to live and work in the global community.

It allows students to experience a brief but diverse introduction to China but this year’s trip is likely to be the last due to cuts.

Mofozzul (26) said: “The Study China Programme is an opportunity to achieve and learn a lot about the fastest growing economic country in the world as well as learn the culture and history of the biggest populated country on Earth.

Above all, this was a great way to learn the widest-spoken language in the world.

“This programme has changed my personal views and thoughts about China as a nation.

“I feel that I’ve had the best time of my life so far in China. I really enjoyed spending three weeks to learn its language, culture, history and about economic development.

“My heart goes out to Nanjing every time I talk or think about China. The people of that nation are very nice, friendly and helpful.

“This programme has changed my future plans and I will definitely consider a future career path that links to China.

“When I was giving my speech at the opening ceremony on behalf of all the students, I did mention that I am very lucky to be able to attend this programme and feel privileged and proud of these achievements.”
