LACING up for a run... Nikki Green has set up a new running group in Moorside.
Mum Nikki forms a new running club
A MUM from Moorside will be pounding the pavements to pass on her sporting inspiration.
Mum-of-two Nikki Green, (44), admits to struggling to even run up the stairs without being out of breath before she took up regular training.
But almost 18 months later she has now become a qualified Run In England group leader in Oldham, to inspire others to pull on their trainers and head outdoors and has formed the Moorside Motivators.
It was a mission that saw her take on the run of her life for her 91-year-old grandfather Herbert Dale.
Her much-loved hero died from lung cancer days before she completed her first 5km Race for Life in July last year. But she soldiered on in his memory.
She said: “The atmosphere of the event was brilliant.
“All those sad thoughts about losing him were replaced with good memories while doing the run — it was overwhelming.
“He was jolly and outgoing and still active right until the end.”
By day Nikki, of Higher Fullwood, works as a transport clerk in Shaw. But by night she is pounding the streets with endless energy.
After sticking with her initial running group, and even tackling the exhausting Manchester 10k for the British Heart Foundation on May 15, she is now ready to go it alone with a whole new group of beginners.
She added: “When you’re running it feels so good. You’re out in the fresh air, with friends and it’s a fantastic way of relaxing and removing any stress.
“I’ve lost weight, got fitter and I can easily run up the stairs now.”
The group for beginners will meet for the first time at the Sholver Community Centre, Moorside on Monday at 6.45pm.
