Bikers ‘destroying a rich habitat’

CONCERNS have been voiced about the effects of off-road biking at Lark Hill Quarry in Delph.
Locals are arguing that an increase in the use of the site by four-wheel drives and scramblers is turning the spot into a muddy race track.
Parish Councillor Ken Hulme said: “The quarry off Lark Hill Lane has developed a rich habitat in which many birds nest and hares inhabit.
“This is being destroyed by off-road vehicles and motorbike scrambling which is eroding the soil and destroying the fauna and flora.
“What used to be a quiet beauty spot is now being turned into a blot on the landscape. Not only is the area becoming a muddy mess it appears that stone walls are being damaged.”
Countryside rangers have also raised concern and have asked those biking in the area to be more respectful.
One ranger said that bikers had been caught venturing on to private land and expressed worry that noise and disruption could cause harm to local wildlife including ground nesting birds.
