LS LOWRY’s painting The Football Match has been sold for a record £5.6 million at auction at Christie’s in London.
The painting, from 1949, which hasn’t been seen in public for 20 years, depicts hundreds of the late artist’s popular matchstick men.
The sale smashed the previous record set in 2007, when Good Friday, Daisy Nook (1946) sold for £3.77 million.
