A chance to fix crumbling buildings

Date published: 31 May 2011

A CHARITY has launched a nationwide search to find the 10 most endangered buildings.

Oldhamers are invited to nominate a Victorian or Edwardian building at risk in their local area.

The campaign aims to highlight the problems facing many historic buildings.

Nominations in previous years have included schools, mills, pubs, stately homes and chapels.

Oldham’s town hall, built 170 years ago, has suffered years of neglect and was once on The Victorian Society’s list.

The charity’s director Dr Ian Dungavell said: “At the moment, wide-ranging council cuts mean certain building types are under threat as never before.

“In many cases, the money for restoration simply isn’t there.

“However, these buildings mustn’t be left to rot.

“The cost of weatherproofing a building and protecting if from vandals need not be huge — but it can make a massive difference.”

Anyone with a suggestion should send an email to katie@victoriansociety.org.uk or post a nomination to 1 Priory Gardens, London, W4 1TT.
