A CONTROVERSIAL planning application for seven detached homes at the former Crompton Hall site has been given the green light.

However, developer Vian Homes will have to hand over a substantial chunk of the surrounding woodland — plus money for its future maintenance — to the council for public use.

Fiercely-fought plans for 15 apartments at the Shaw beauty spot off Buckstones Road were passed on appeal in 2007. But these were never built because the popularity of flats declined.

The Cheshire-based firm then applied to build eight houses.

The latest application was for seven three, four and five-bedroom homes in the grounds which contain a derelict bungalow.

Over the years, Crompton Hall Action Group has fought several sets of plans. Objections included overcrowding, road safety, inadequate parking, loss of trees, drainage and the effect on neighbouring properties.

Ken Waddington, speaking for the applicant, said: “There has been a misconception that we are constructing in the existing wood.

“This is incorrect. We are building on the site of the existing house and garden.”

Councillor John Hudson supported the application and said: “I think this is the best scheme we are going to get.

“There might be emotional grounds, but I cannot find any planning grounds on which you can say this hasn’t dealt with everything officers and various departments at Oldham have asked.

“A lot of time has been given both to the residents and planning issues and I am happy we have got the best outcome.”
