Clothing donation scam warning
Date published: 08 June 2011
CANCER charity Macmillan Cancer Support has warned Oldhamers of a clothing collection scam operating in the area.
The charity says it has been notified that residents are receiving flyers through their doors asking for donations of clothes, bedding, curtains, shoes, handbags, belts and soft toys which will be sold to raise money for Macmillan.
The charity says it is not connected with the flyer which has been produced without its knowledge or permission.
It is urging people not to make any donation as a result of the flyer, and a spokeswoman said: “It is highly unlikely that the charity will benefit in any way.”
Police have been informed about the issue, and Caroline Savage, head of fundraising for the charity, said: “Macmillan is not asking for donations of clothes and household goods at present.
“If anyone would like to find out how they can support or work with people affected by cancer and be sure that all their donation comes to the charity, I suggest they visit our website, www.macmillan.org.uk or ring 01925 846740.”
