Youngsters all set for Borough Games

TALENTED youngsters are warming up to take part in a festival of sport — the eighth annual Oldham Borough Games.

Dozens of schoolchildren will compete against each other across eight sporting disciplines at The Radclyffe School, Hunt Lane, Chadderton, on Saturday from 10am until 3pm.

All those taking part have been talent-spotted by Oldham Council’s Integrated Youth Service to represent their area.

Teams will represent the six districts of the borough: West Oldham, East Oldham, Saddleworth and Lees, Royton and Shaw, Failsworth and Hollinwood, and Chadderton.

The sports involved are football, tag rugby, high-five netball, cricket for girls, tennis, volleyball, athletics and dance.

The disciplines were chosen as they are regularly coached in schools by the council’s team of trainers. They also provide opportunities for the young people to continue participating after the event in the form of local sessions and community clubs.

Councillor Hugh McDonald, Cabinet member for children, young people, families, leisure and culture, said: “Encouraging our young people to take part in sport is important as it helps form a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age.

“The Oldham Borough Games are always worthwhile as they not only showcase the skills of talented young athletes but also bring together different communities through sport.”

The Oldham Borough Games were established in 2004 to encourage young people to compete in a major sporting event. The day provides youngsters with the opportunity to meet with, and compete against, children from different cultures and communities. One key aim is to strengthen and support the links between schools, communities and local sports clubs.
