THE future of Stoneleigh Primary School will be decided later this month after worried residents and parents voiced their concerns over building work which has ground to a halt.

Oldham Council’s Cabinet members will discuss the progress of the £1.1million plans at the Vulcan Street site at a meeting set for June 27.

Stephen Fairbrother, a co-optee on the East Oldham District Partnership, wrote to Councillor Hugh McDonald, outlining his fears.

He said: “Why have the refurbishment works at the school been stopped when it is clear to all that the planned improvements are much needed?

“Some of us have fought for years to get this money invested in Derker — it’s been starved of cash and facilities for too long.”

But Councillor McDonald, Cabinet member for children, young people, families, leisure and culture, hit back.

He said: “We recognise there are a number of challenges facing Stoneleigh School and we are considering all options at this early stage.

“The new administration has only just taken power and before making any decisions we would like to assess and examine the situation thoroughly so that the long-term interests of pupils, parents and staff are looked after.

“The education of pupils is of paramount importance and Oldham Council will continue to give Stoneleigh Primary School its full support so the children fulfil their potential and receive the best start in life.”

The tender to refurbish and remodel Stoneleigh was approved in February. It included community facilities.

The council has confirmed that it is considering all options and a report will go before Cabinet members on June 27.
