Olympic torch chance to shine
Date published: 17 June 2011
OLDHAMERS are being told to put their names forward for the historic honour of becoming an Olympic torch bearer.
Nominations for carrying the torch leading up to the London Olympics are now open — but residents need to act soon to be in with a chance.
From May 19 to July 27, next year, an average of 110 people a day will be involved across the country as the Olympic flame makes its way to London.
To stand a chance of getting involved, anyone can apply by filling in a form at www.london2012.com/ games/olympic-torch-relay/carrying-the-olympic-flame/nominate-a-torchbearer.php and return it no later than Wednesday, June 29.
Councillor Hugh McDonald said: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get involved in the build-up to what is a truly global event. A few initial dates have been confirmed already and we know that the torch will be travelling through the North-West around the middle of June, 2012. A more detailed route will be announced later this year.”
In the countdown to London 2012, there will be many Olympic-inspired opportunities to get involved in across the borough.
The Oldham Business Leadership Group will be launching a project next month called One Future that aims to build an Olympic legacy.
