1,500 to line up for beer walk
Date published: 17 June 2011
OUTRAGEOUS costumes and hilarious antics will be out in force in Saddleworth tomorrow for the famous annual beer walk.
The event starts at 1pm from Churchill playing fields, Greenfield, with fancy-dress enthusiasts lining up to tackle the 10-mile trek all in the name of fun and charity.
This year representatives of Oldham’s new youth centre, Mahdlo, will set up camp at the starting point, encouraging those who are not walking for a particular charity to support their cause.
Beer walk chairman Dave MacDougall said: “We’re up on last year’s pre-walk sign-ups and we already have 1,500 people who have registered to come. The beer walk can grow but it needs to grow safely — it’s becoming more and more vital to work with highways and the police.
“We’re really looking forward to be able to hand over money to charity and the walk should be really good fun. Fingers are crossed for the weather!”
Organisers will also be providing updates via twitter about closure times for beer stall and route updates.
