Kick-off for new football league
Date published: 20 June 2011
A NEW league for talented footballers has been created at Oldham Athletic’s community trust.
Players aged 16-18 will take part in an organised local six-a-side competition with teams from across the borough every Thursday.
Jamie Blood, football development coordinator, said: “We hope that people who have commitments during the weekend or simply do not have the opportunity to play 11-a-side, will take part. This is a great opportunity to play regular football, make new friends and keep fit.”
The start date for the league — costing £2 per person each week — is Thursday, July 21, and it will run for around 20 weeks, with silverware for the champions.
Games will be played from 7pm until 9pm at the new 3G games pitch at Hathershaw School, and teams will also have chances to win football equipment, kits, medals and trophies.
Mr Blood added: “The drop off at 16 years old from football is massive. With this new league we hope to attract players to stay within the sport.”
