Scooter-tragedy dad had announced wedding plans
A MOORSIDE dad was on his way to buy milk for his baby when he was knocked from his scooter and killed.

The family of Michael Lofthouse have spoken of their loss at what should have been a happy time after he had just announced he was to marry his girlfriend, Kathryn Walker.
The 27-year-old was heading to a shop on Thursday night when his Yamaha collided with a Toyota Colorado, which was reversing off a driveway in Turf Pit Lane, only yards from where he lived in Hayfield Close.

He was flung from the scooter and died from his injuries at the Royal Oldham Hospital.

Heartbroken Kathryn (25), who was at home looking after their four-week-old baby Keeley-June and two-year-old Ellie-May, said: “We had enough baby milk but he was adamant he was going to get more. He kept saying that he didn’t want his baby to go without.

“He gave me a kiss and told me he loved me and said he would only be five minutes. He was the love of my life. He was devoted to his girls. He was such a good man, he would have dropped anything that he was doing to go and help someone else.”

Devastated mum Sandra, who lives on the same street, said: “It was such a shock. It’s very hard. What’s hurting me is that he won’t see his children grow up, who have lost a father and won’t see their dad, and it seems all so unfair.

“It’s just an awful tragedy. They had just announced that they were going to get married.

“It’s just a tragic accident. We were best of mates and will just miss him. He lived life to the full and would help anyone.

“He could be funny. He used to play practical jokes on his workmates but he could also be serious. His three brothers are all devastated at the moment.

“I’d like to say a big thank-you to the two people who helped Michael at the scene and the staff at the hospital. I’d also like to thank all the neighbours who have rallied round and supported us.”

Dad Keith said: “I have not just lost my son, I have also lost my best mate.”

Michael and Kathryn had lived in Bradford but moved to the same street as Michael’s parents two years ago. Kathryn is now planning to move back to Bradford for a fresh start.

Michael had worked for a cleaning contractor but was unemployed at the time of the accident.

The former Counthill School pupil enjoyed fishing, football, off-road biking and walking his dog.

Police are urging witnesses to contact the Road Policing Unit on 0161-856 8473.
