FLASHBACK to the popular donkey derby, which returns to High Crompton’s fun weekend
Donkeys make welcome return to fun weekend
the donkeys are on their way back back at High Crompton’s fun weekend by popular demand
For a couple of years, organisers have had to resort to alternative modes of transport including space hopper and inflatables because of the high insurance premiums, but they never proved quite as popular.
Now St Mary’s Men’s Society is hoping to bring floods of local folk back to St Mary’s School playing fields in Rushcroft Road for High Crompton’s answer to the Grand National.
There will be seven individual races and the the winners of each will compete for the title of ultimate donkey derby racer.
Also on offer will be hoopla, bottle stalls, children’s games and lots more.
Committee member Harry Batey said: “It’s a really fun event and I’m sure people will be looking forward to having the donkeys back.
“This year we are combining the derby with St Mary’s Church summer fair — they didn’t have one this year because of another event locally so they are joining up with us instead.
“Any money raised will be split between local charities, like churches or hospices.”
The gates are open at 1pm and the donkey races start at 2.30pm on Sunday, July 10.
The day before the race is the High Crompton Beer Walk, which will be raising money for local charities.
People are invited to get into their best fancy-dress outfits and meet at the North Star in Rushcroft Road.
Revellers will visit six pubs in High Crompton on a loop before heading back to the North Star.
The event starts at 6.30pm and is expected to finish around 11pm.
There is no signing-up list as people just turn up on the night.
