Budding artist’s flower power

LITTLE Ruby Jackson will see her artistic designs adorning posters across Oldham to accompany the borough’s Bloom and Grow entry.
The six-year-old, a pupil at St Hugh’s CE Primary in Holts, scooped top spot in a contest organised by the council.
Youngsters were invited to create new pieces of public art based on the theme of past, present and future transport.
Ruby’s image, which features different modes of transport as the heads of flowers in a vase, will now be printed on to large banners which will take pride of place in various spots across the town centre.
The budding artist will also receive her own personal banner and a voucher for Spindles.
The posters will be seen by the North-West in Bloom judges when they visit the town later this year to view Oldham’s annual Bloom and Grow effort.
The competition attracted more than 200 entries from local schools.
Runners-up were Scott Flanagan, from Royton Hall Primary; Georgia Louise Jones, from Yew Tree Community Primary in Chadderton; Muskan Kaur Khaneja, from Propps Hall Primary in Failsworth; and Danielle Wolf, from St Herbert’s RC Primary in Chadderton.
They will have their art printed on to hoardings, which will be exhibited around Mumps roundabout while work is being undertaken on the tram route into Oldham.
Councillor Jean Stretton said: “This competition has been a fantastic opportunity for young people to get involved in Bloom and Grow and also to find out more about the future of transport in Oldham.”
