Join chain gang for 60-mile record bid

FUND-RAISERS are hoping to staple down a Guinness World Record for the longest paper chain — totalling 60 miles.
Tiny strips of paper will be linked together by volunteers to produce a trial the length of driving from Oldham to Blackpool.
Volunteers will perform the meticulous and enduring challenge at Hollinwood’s Werneth House in August in support of British Muslim relief and development agency Muslim Aid.
Northern regional fund-raiser for Muslim Aid Imran Hussain (30) is urging local people to get involved in their plight to raise £50,000 nationally.
He said: “This is an idea we have had for a long time and we are finally doing it.
“All the money will go towards educational projects in the world’s developing countries.
“We need all the support we can get on the day, because this is a tough challenge and for a great cause.”
The current world record paper chain was set in Virginia, USA, six years ago, stretching 54.33miles.
The 24-hour challenge on Saturday August 20 begins at 5am.
Each strip of paper must be no more than 18in long and no wider than 11/4in — and each loop must be hand-stapled.
No more than 60 people can be working on the challenge at one time.
Werneth House, on Manchester Road, is the current and temporary headquarters for Muslim Aid and volunteers coming from as far as Birmingham and London will be helping on the day.
