OLDHAM’S musical youth put their creative skills to the test with a week of workshops, concerts and showcases.

Around 5,000 local youngsters took part in Oldham Schools Music Week which runs every year.

The week saw participants take advantage of woodwind, brass and string workshop sessions with industry professionals at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

The Halle Orchestra hosted an Electric Strings day which saw more than 100 children learn more about violins, violas, cellos and the double bass.

And virtuoso multi-instrumentalist Jim Stretton played 12 different instruments during one breathtaking performance before boosting the skills of more than 200 young brass, woodwind and percussion players.

Regular attendees of groups, bands and choirs at Oldham Music Centre also staged performances over three nights at the Queen Elizabeth Hall to showcase their well rehearsed skills.

Gerard Booth, director of music, said: “The aim of the week is to get as many local youngsters as possible involved with music from those who play an instrument or sing regularly to those who have never done anything musical before.”
