CHADDERTON is finally a step closer to a new housing scheme — five years after award-winning plans were unveiled for “cube” homes which never materialised.

Oldham Council has bought the former site of TOB (Contractors) Ltd in Spencer Street by Compulsory Purchase Order.

It is described as the “final piece of the jigsaw” needed to complete the development of 112 properties, including 32 affordable homes for low income families.

The site will be transferred to developers Countryside Properties which has already started work on adjoining land.

Spencer Street was part of the multi-million Housing Market Renewal scheme to regenerate homes and neighbourhoods in parts of Oldham.

Plans for quirky cube-shaped mews terrace housing were unveiled in 2006, winning top spot in Europan 8, a competition for young designers.

But the 149 new homes with integral parking, roof terraces and renewable energy were never built.

Councillor Dave Hibbert, cabinet member for housing, transport and regeneration, said: “I am delighted to be able to announce this land purchase as it means the council and our partners can now move ahead with our project to build modern and affordable homes on this site.

“I see the construction industry as being a significant factor in stimulating our borough’s economy.

“This is a major building scheme which will have a positive impact on the area both in terms of creating jobs during the building process and providing good quality family homes for residents.”
