Only one choice for youngsters

A NAME has been chosen for the new Roman Catholic primary school which brings together Our Lady’s Primary School, Moorside, and Sacred Heart Junior, Infant and Nursery School in Derker.

An overwhelming vote in favour of the name St Theresa’s from children and parents of the two schools and parishioners from the two areas, gave it the title.

Head teacher of the new school, Maureen Taylor, said it was difficult to know why the name St Theresa had been so popular. But when she gave a talk to pupils about the six possible names for the school which were on the table, they took an involuntary gasp when she showed them a picture of St Theresa.

“All the children voted for her,” said Mrs Taylor.

“Whether that is because she is a modern saint, or whether it was because she died when she was young, or even because parishioners voted for her — I am not sure.”

St Theresa’s relics were on recent display at Salford Cathedral, and the Bishop of Salford, gave his sanction to the choice of name.

The school has also chosen a new logo of a cross and a rose, in honour of St Theresa’s fondness of roses, and her being known as “The Little Flower.”

The new school will take on the name when it opens in September on the Sacred Heart site.

It will cater for 210 boys and girls, aged three to 11, and have a 26-place nursery.
