NEGLECTED areas of Derker have been given a new lease of life thanks to a hard-working team of volunteers.
The Derker Community Action Team, which is made up local residents, spent several days cleaning up, weeding and planting shrubs, trees and flowers at communal courtyards in Cheltenham Street.
When the hard work was done, the volunteers hosted a fun day complete with face painting, food and games.
The project was delivered by Groundwork and supported by First Choice Homes and Bramall Construction Ltd.
As well as developing valuable experience and skills, participants also gained a Level 1 Certificate in Community Volunteering.
Volunteer Bernard Ingham (54) said: “They gave us back our self respect by letting us make a difference in our own community. We completed gardening, planting, weeding, making raised beds and generally cleaning up our community. I would recommend the experience to everyone.”
