Craig back on home turf to help out
OLDHAM actor Craig Gazey will head back to his roots on Thursday to help boost the funds of a pioneering project.
ROCA — Respect Our Community Awards — was launched three years ago by First Choice Homes and has been a resounding success.
The social homes provider puts money into a fund, which is boosted by private-sector sponsorship.
Groups can apply for cash for a host of projects — from community Picnics in the Park to equipment for musical groups.
“The range of projects which have been supported is quite amazing,” says Steve Yorke, an executive director at FCHO, which launched the scheme three years ago. Around 100 people will be in the Chadderton Suite at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Oldham, on Thursday for the launch of this year’s sponsorship drive.
FCHO chief executive Cath Green will outline he aims and objectives of the drive for support and actor Craig, whose parents still live in Royton, will lend his support.
Gazey, who recently left “Coronation Street” where he played butcher-turned-window cleaner Graham Proctor, after a successful three years on the cobbles.
He will talk to supporters, potential sponsors and visit the many groups who will be exhibiting their projects.
Joanne White, FCHO project manager for the scheme, said: “There will be many of our existing sponsors in attendance and around 15 companies and organisations who have expressed an interest in supporting ROCA.”
John Porter, a partner at Wrigley Claydon Solicitors, Oldham, is chairman of the independent awarding panel.
He added: “This really is a marvellous initiative.
“So many people, young and old, have benefited in the past three years. The more money we have in the pot, the more we can support these truly worthy projects.”
Following a short DVD illustrating some of the events supported by ROCA, and contributions by musical groups who have enjoyed financial support, there will be a buffet supper.
Companies or organisations wishing to attend can call Joanne on 0161-770 3796.
