Weekend of family fun

SUNSHINE and showers greeted visitors during Shaw and Crompton’s family weekend for a jam-packed programme of activities.
Around 5,000 car enthusiasts and local residents took in the sights and sounds of cars, jeeps, trucks and bikes revving their way round Shaw and Crompton yesterday.
The vehicles took part in a seven-mile circular procession route starting in the centre of Shaw bathed in glorious sunshine.
Leading the procession was a jet black 1953 MG TD, followed by an American Cadillac, a Mustang, a three-wheeler motorbike and an army vehicle complete with machine gun.
On Saturday, rain and drizzle failed to stop around 3,000 people from attending the fun day, which was organised
Activities included a climbing wall, traditional routines by the Higher Crompton Morris Dancers, and visits by a fire engine, with stalls galore at Market Street and Market Square in Shaw. Visitors were also treated to a mini-railway ride.
Councillor John Hall, chairman of Shaw and Crompton Parish Council, said: “The whole weekend was a really good success and over £200 was raised for this year’s chairman’s charity Surestart Children’s Centre in Shaw.
“Even though the weather was bad on Saturday, there was still a good turnout, and you couldn’t beat the weather on Sunday.
“Every year we get more and more unusual vehicles so we are already looking forward to next year. The weekend is now a firm fixture in the Shaw and Crompton calendar.”
Shaw councillor Mark Alcock, chairman of the parish council communications and promotions team, said: “Saturday was a bit of a wash-out, weather-wise, but we had record numbers of people yesterday.
“People have come to expect this weekend so next year, we will have more activities for everyone on both days.”
