FLASHBACK... to Frank Rothwell’s Hollinwood sign on the verge of the M60.
HOLLYWOOD could be heading back to Hollinwood after local businessman Frank Rothwell submitted plans for a bigger and better “Hollinwood” sign.
Measuring 60ft long and 20ft high, Mr Rothwell wants the white illuminated sign spelling out the district name situated on the site of the former Roxy cinema.
Although the land is owned by Oldham Council, he is positive councillors, residents and visitors alike will welcome the new addition on the M60 corridor.
And he said he wants the sign to be visible by aeroplanes jetting to and from Manchester Airport.
He said: “The sign is a community asset. It also promotes Hollinwood and Oldham in a positive way and will have an iconic presence.
“I believe Hollinwood will become a major commercial centre because it’s so easy to get to on all modes of transport.
“Until the council decide to do something with the former Roxy site, why not have it there?”
In August, 2009, Mr Rothwell erected a smaller, 8ft tall ‘Hollinwood’ sign on the M60 embankment near the southbound slip road at junction 22.
However, the Highways Agency deemed the letters a danger to motorists and removed them.
Mr Rothwell, who owns Manchester Cabins, submitted his latest plans to the council on June 6 and said a result is due in the next six weeks.
The cost of building the new sign is £10,000 and Mr Rothwell is hoping local businesses will contribute to the cost.
He said: “I’ve had very positive reactions to my new plans so far, everyone has said it will look good.
“Once the Roxy site is developed, it will move to a more permanent home — I’m still looking for that.”
