Talented dancers move to the sound of contest success

STUDENTS from an Oldham dance academy have bagged a hat-trick of prizes in a North-West contest.

The dancers won the Under-9s, Under-14s and Under-18s team events at the International Dance Teachers Association’s North-West freestyle and rock ’n’ roll competition.

And that means the three teams, Razzle Dazzle (4-10 years), Crazy Criminals (10-15) and Dynamite (13-17) will dance at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens in November to represent the North-West at the national championships.

Razzle Dazzle have now won the North-West title for three years in a row, and it is the second year running for Dynamite to get a first.

The dance school, in Cromford Street, also came away from the competition with 10 winners, 40 finalists and 70 semi-finalists in individual categories, who will also represent the region at Blackpool.

Pure Dance Academy was a winner at the One Oldham Business Awards 2011, and a delighted dance teacher Rebecca Jarvis said: “It’s a fitting tribute to the memory of Edith Everington who died last month. She was a devoted grandmother to Rebecca, an avid helper and dear friend to all children and parents at the school.”

A BROTHER and sister have shown they share a talent for dancing after picking up seven first places between them in a regional final.

It was the first time Luke (10) and Sophie Bamber (15), from Stanedge, have won such a competition.

The pair, from Derker’s Pure Dance Academy, will now represent the North-West in the national finals in Blackpool in November after the success in the International Dance Teachers’ Association’s freestyle and rock ’n’ roll contest at Wythenshawe Forum.

Luke, a pupil at Knowsley Junior School in Springhead, took the Under-13s solo, star dance rock ‘n’ roll, pairs Under-13s and pairs rock ‘n’ roll with partner Penny Sharp.

Sophie, of Saddleworth School, won the Under-18s solo as well as the rock ‘n’ roll and Under-18s pairs with partner Lauren Warrington. The pair were also involved in two team wins.

Proud mum Anne Bamber said: “I’m delighted. They love dancing and it keeps them fit and active.”
