A good day’s work

A HOUSE-to-house collection by Shaw and Crompton Voluntary Committee for Macmillan Cancer Support has bought a “good day” for eight local people with cancer.

The fundraisers netted £3,226 by tramping the streets with collection boxes, and have pledged the cash to the charity’s “Give a Good Day” appeal.

Macmillan says £369 is the cost of giving one person with cancer a good day, and, thanks to the generosity of local people, the donation will give eight good days to someone in Oldham with cancer, with a bit left over in the kitty towards the ninth.

Delighted with the success of the collection, committee member David Quarmby said: “The people of Oldham have been extremely generous and we are very grateful.

“Collecting is quite a strenuous affair, but we all experience an uplift when people tell us how important Macmillan has been in their lives and how pleased they have been with efforts made on their behalf.”

The house-to-house collection brings the committee’s fundraising total so far this year to £9,000.

A further donation of £1000 from the Quizzers at the Halfway House, Royton, boosted it to £10,000.

A Macmillan “Give a Good Day” grant is a one-off payment for adults, young people or children with cancer, to cover a wide range of practical and support needs.

It can be used for items such as heating bills, extra clothing, equipment to enable someone to carry on enjoying their hobby, or to give a much needed break.

People can apply through a health or social care professional, such as a social worker, district nurse, or a Macmillan Nurse, and grants do not affect benefits.
