THOUSANDS of revellers are expected to descend on Alexandra Park as Oldham plays host to one of Pakistan’s brightest stars.
Attaullah Khan, one of the country’s most famous folk singers, is being flown in especially for the Oldham Mela festival on Sunday.
Known for releasing over 400 albums, he’ll be performing alongside UK Asian superstars Navin Kundra and Bonafide as well as a whole host of local acts.
Organisers are now expecting record crowds to attend the festival-style celebration, with visitors flocking from far and wide.
Chairman Shaehzad Chaudhry said: “Everyone is shocked he is coming to Oldham. It’s a big thing.”
Organised by voluntary youth organisation the Mega Mela Group, the event is completely free.
Colourful costumes, arts and crafts, delicious food and dancing will all bring the bustling atmosphere of the bazaar to Oldham during the two-day bonanza.
A relaxing chill-out area for families will allow locals to dip in and out of the fun, while art displays, sports and activities for the youngsters will provide something for every generation.
The festivities start at noon on both days, with a fun fair on Saturday and the Mela festival 24 hours later.
The word Mela comes from the Sanskrit ‘to meet’, used widely across Asia and celebrated as a holiday.
Shaehzad Chaudhry added: “It is for everyone to come together and have a good time — it brings people into Oldham for the right reasons.”
