Town-centre parking gets Cannon St boost

A NEW town-centre car park has opened on the site of the former Cannon Street Health Centre.
The council bought the land when it became redundant following the opening of Oldham’s new integrated care centre.
Some parking spaces are already available with more to follow when the 1960s building is demolished.
The car park will replace the temporary facility on John Street — the site of the former Pennine Way Hotel — which is needed for the Metrolink development.
In the long term it hoped that the health-centre site, along with adjoining assets, will attract redevelopment of the area bounded by Cannon Street, Manchester Street and Oldham Way, including the former Sainsbury’s site.
Councillor Dave Hibbert, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “These proposals are a real boost for all the parties who are working together to help regenerate our town centre.
“No one wants to see a derelict building in the town centre fall into disrepair and become an eyesore so this new temporary car park will help to generate a short-term income for the council taxpayer prior to the site being redeveloped.
“The creation of the new facility will also mean there are more spaces for motorists to use when they are coming into the town centre to shop or work.”
