AN ENERGETIC mum will be biking for the brownies after ditching the car and saddling up.
Mum-of-three Louise Roscoe from Uppermill decided to leave the car on the drive and use pedal power to make it to work and back in Salford three times a week.
Now she’ll be using her skills to provide a lifeline for the Pickhill hut used by the 52nd Oldham Brownies in the village, where she has been a leader for five years.
Tackling the 60-mile ride from Manchester to Blackpool on Sunday, she’ll be hoping to raise as much money as she can to help repair the rundown guide and brownie hut.
Louise (40), of Grove Road, said: “The building has been up since the 1920s but it has fallen into disrepair, estimates have come in at around £3,000 to sort out things like damp, access and all the interiors.
“I’m passionate about girl-guiding. We’ve got mothers and grandmothers of girls now who also attended there and we want to maintain that building for generations to come.”
Rocketing fuel prices made Louise ditch the car and cycle to her job running a manufacturing company.
“Everyone thought I was mad turning up at work on the bike but I’d urge anyone to do it, get on that bike, save some money and get into it,” Louise added.
“Guiding contributes such a lot to help children become polite, confident young members of society and to be able a cause like that in the process is great.
“They keep saying they can’t believe how far I’m going, it’ll be great to be able to breathe new life into the hut.”
