IT was a case of high spirits and down the hatch across High Crompton on Saturday when 150 walkers spread across 24 teams joined in the annual Beer Walk.

Organisers estimate the evening of fun and frolics raked in an estimated £10,000 for charity, as walkers rattled cans and collected sponsorship for their beer-drinking and ground-covering challenge.

The walk started at 6.30pm from the North Star pub, and revellers made their way at their own pace around the Waggon and Horses, the Black Horse, High Crompton Conservative Club, Colliers Return, the Fir View and back to the North Star for the finish.

The Beer Walk, which has been run every year for more than 30 years, is a highlight in the High Crompton calendar, with participants downing half of bitter at each pub.

Beer walk committee member Harry Batey said: “It all went off very well with no problems, and I’m guessing the teams would raise somewhere in the region of £10,000 for different charities.”

Each team picks its own charity to raise money for, and the winners of the best dressed team is awarded £200 towards their cause.

Walkers dressed as animals to make up “Nobby’s Ark,” were crowned as the 2011 champions, with the best-dressed women’s team, “Robin Hoods,” and the best-dressed team including men won by “Cowboys and Indians.”

They each won £100 towards their own charities. \
