Summit on Uppermill parking

A PUBLIC meeting will be held in Uppermill later this month to address local residents’ concerns about parking in the village.

Arranged by the Saddleworth Parish Council, the meeting will be held in the ballroom at the Civic Hall on Tuesday, July 26 at 7.30pm.

It follows a heated debate at a recent meeting of the parish council, in which Lee Street residents pleaded with councillors to back a residents parking scheme on the street.

Gail Booth was at the meeting, and spoke out on behalf of residents on the street.

Reacting to the meeting she said: “I welcome the date of the meeting and the speed with which it has been arranged. I do hope it’s not just a meeting to placate locals and that some positive action will be taken as a result. The situation is untenable at the moment.”

The introduction of time-limited stays on village car parks has caused great tension between residents and business owners.

Add to the mix extensive roadworks through the centre of Uppermill and residents claim the situation is at breaking point.

The public gathering promises to be tense affair if the last such meeting is anything to go by, which saw hundreds cram into the venue to deliver their verdict on the Churchill playing fields plan.
