Moleman takes case to Europe
Date published: 13 July 2011
OLDHAM moleman Peter Brown has travelled to Brussels to tell politicians he has lost his business because of EU rules.
Peter, from Shaw, flew to Belgium yesterday to attend today’s meeting of the EU Petitions Committee.
He has never left the country before so had to get a passport and fly for the first time.
He will tell the committee his livelihood as a mole catcher was destroyed by the EU Biocide Directive which has banned the use of strychnine despite it being safely used by the profession for 70 years.
Peter (58) has staged various protests about his plight and his David and Goliath case is being supported by the UK Independence Party.
He said: “Only trapping or the use of aluminium phosphide is now allowed. The strychnine used to kill moles within 15 minutes but trapping takes twice as long and aluminium phosphide can take up to two days.”
The EU’s Petitions Committee enables citizens to complain about EU matters which affect them directly.
He added: “I have only been give five minutes to say my piece but, have no doubt, I will make sure that the members of this committee understand.”
Paul Nuttall, UKIP’s North West Euro-MP, will be accompanying him.
