OLDHAM was today toasting the achievements of its latest crop of graduates in a cap and gown ceremony at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

We found some inspirational stories among them

GEORGINA Harrison and Hayley Moore will join a select club today.

The pair are only the second and third UCO students to graduate with a first in law.

Georgina (21), from Failsworth, became interested in the subject while at Oldham Sixth Form College.

She got hooked researching criminal cases and is now thinking of becoming a legal executive after originally considering a career as a solicitor.

She said: “I’m really happy about my first. I didn’t expect to get it, but then it’s always nice to be surprised.”

Former Oldham College student Hayley plans to do a legal practice course, the practical training required to join a solicitors firm.

The 20-year-old, from Newhey, admitted that her law degree wasn’t easy but said: “If it’s taught me one thing then it’s to not give up. Keep going and you will get there.

“In the first year, my grades were not as high, but then this year they just went through the roof and that’s how I got my first.”

Senior lecturer Jackie Lane is proud of the duo and said: “Firsts are very rare so we are delighted to get two this year. We have only had one other in the 10 years we’ve been teaching at Oldham.”
