Fast-food vans may be banned from parts of Saddleworth
A HERITAGE champion from Saddleworth is mounting a bid to ban fast-food vans from key streets in conservation areas.
Councillor Mike Buckley says he will approach the next meeting of the Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership to propose certain streets at the heart of the villages are no-go zones for catering vans.
It comes after a van, decorated with a provocative woman dressed as an angel, appeared on the high street in Delph ahead of Whit Friday in June. At the time, Oldham Council confirmed that complaints had been received from local residents.
Councillor Buckley said: “Our conservation areas are places of immense character, appreciated by residents and visitors alike; they need to be protected against thoughtless actions that damage their appearance and the experience.
“I am not against fast-food vans being available on special occasions or during popular events, but their positioning clearly needs to be controlled if we can’t rely on the good sense and consideration of the operators to regulate themselves.”
The next meeting of the Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership will take place on Thursday, September 29.
