WERNETH could get 52 new homes, including 10 classed as affordable, after Cabinet approved an agreement for Suthers Court.
Regenda, is bidding for funding from the Homes and Communities Agency to build the affordable homes on the site, which will also see a plot of public open space and a play area.
The work is phase two of a development that has already seen 57 houses built on the site.
Cabinet also last night supported plans for six new affordable three-bedroom homes, for Aksa Housing Association, in Buckley Street, Uppermill, which should be complete by late 2012, subject to planning permission.
The council is investing the £342,470 granted under agreements with developers in the schemes, and this figure will be more than doubled by Aksa which will provide funding of more the £750,000.
Councillor Dave Hibbert, (housing, transport and regeneration), said: “Coupled with phase one of work this new development signals the start of exciting times in the regeneration of North Werneth.
“Under the terms of the agreement, and by using council land to build the new homes, it means council tax payers do not have to pay a penny towards the work.
“The proposed new homes in Uppermill show the council has made the best use of money from previous planning agreements to build six new homes.
“I see the construction industry as a key factor in stimulating the borough’s economy and projects like these can only have a positive impact particularly on job creation.”
