RUGBY legend Paul Sculthorpe visited his old school to present Waterhead Academy’s team with its new kit.
“Scully”, the former Great Britain and St Helen’s rugby league captain, visited the academy’s Moorside Campus — the former Counthill School.
The kit has been bought thanks to a £10,000 grant from Sport England, submitted by Waterhead Academy with the support of Paul’s coaching company — Paul Sculthorpe Rugby League Skills and Development.
As well as buying the new kits and equipment, the grant has been used to provide rugby coaching for the students. Waterhead Rugby Club, which trains at the Academy, will also use the equipment.
Head of PE Alison Taylor said: “We are so grateful to Paul and the team at the development camp for their support and very generous grant.
“Some of the pupils in the Waterhead Academy rugby team have been having the training since Easter and have absolutely loved it.
“The new kit and equipment will make a massive difference to the team.”
Paul said: “As a former Counthill School pupil myself, it is great to be able to come back here and help the pupils.
“After my own success in rugby league I am pleased to be able to pass on my experience and introduce the next generation to the sport.”
Student Declan Slicker, who plays for the academy’s rugby team, said: “It looks really smart. I’m really pleased we’ve got this new kit, I think we’ll all feel good going on to the pitch for a match wearing this.”
Student Jamie Oliver added: “It’s really exciting to meet Paul Sculthorpe. Even though I’m a Leeds Rhinos fan, it’s good to meet someone who has been so successful.”
