OLDHAM will get new sporting facilities as a lasting Olympic legacy.

The ‘One Future’ project is set to improve the lives of residents and bring about investment across the borough.

Led by Oldham Council, leaders from the private sector and well-known sporting heroes, One Future will ensure London 2012 leaves the borough with something to remember.

The scheme is set to be officially launched tomorrow — just over a year before the Olympic Games opening ceremony.

Council leader Jim McMahon, said: “One Future presents the borough with a great opportunity to firmly position ourselves on the Olympic map, and the council is proud to support this project.

“The Olympics is the biggest sporting event this country has hosted since the World Cup in 1966 and it is vital that we take advantage of any lasting economic, physical and social benefits that they present.”

Opportunities for Oldham youngsters in the run up to the Olympics, will include 100 free tickets being handed out for Paul Scholes’ testimonial football match.

There will also be plenty of chances for young people to meet sporting stars, including ex-Manchester United star David May, cycling champion Mandy Jones and GB hockey player Nicola White, as well as explore interest in growing sports such as handball.

Gallery Oldham has opened a Sporting Heroes exhibition which runs until September 23.
