Beal Hey closure ‘could hit recycling’

THE imminent closure of Shaw’s recycling centre will see Oldham fall behind in dealing with waste.
The borough will be left with just one recycling centre — the fewest in all 10 Greater Manchester authorities.
Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority decided to shut the Beal Hey site, in Chandos Street, in a cost-cutting measure.
Despite a 5,1000-name petition opposing the move, the centre was axed last month and is expected to close in the coming months.
Councillor Philomena Dillon said: “Manchester and Stockport have three sites available to them, the other six will have at least two.
“Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority’s proposal could have a negative effect on recycling rates and could cause increased costs.”
