Pupils have say on new academy

COMMUNITY-conscious pupils at Waterhead Academy have delivered their verdict on their planned state-of-the-art new school.
Teenagers from both campuses raised their concerns about travelling to the new building which is due to open on the former Orb Mill site, off Huddersfield Road, in November, 2012.
It follows 10 weeks of work that has seen the group consult the community, other students and teachers in order to shape the new development.
The scheme was run by Planning for Real, an organisation that helps to get local people involved in the planning process.
Students highlighted potential problem areas around the site such as unlit paths, busy roads and parking issues during a meeting with Oldham Council officials.
Teacher Phil Wilson, charged with ensuring the pupils have their say at the academy, said: “Our students are the best people to tell us what they want from their new school building and to identify problems that will affect them. Their input has been invaluable.”
Officials will now recommend to councillors that the young people involved present their findings to the local District Partnership.
