AN Oldham businessman met the Queen and was praised by a government minister after winning a prestigious award.
David Benstead won the individual award for Enterprise Promotion as part of the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise 2011.
Mr Benstead scooped the top prize for his significant voluntary contribution to enterprise promotion in addition to his role as director of HR, IT and Quality at Diodes Zetex in Chadderton.
He was one of seven Greater Manchester winners to attend an evening reception at Buckingham Palace.
Mr Benstead won the award for working with disadvantaged young people and schools in breaking down barriers to engaging with business and encouraging entrepreneurship.
He said: “I was absolutely delighted to have been chosen to receive the Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion which recognises true public/private sector partnership working successfully in Oldham towards enterprise development.
“This recognition should highlight the efforts and achievements made so far on an enterprise journey, redressing low levels of entrepreneurialism and engaging and inspiring our young people regardless of their background.”
Business Secretary Vince Cable, who presented the awards, said: “It’s wonderful to see that even with a difficult economic climate, individuals such as Mr Benstead continue to find enterprising ways of working.
“I strongly encourage businesses to start thinking about nominations for next year.”
Nominations close on October 31. Entry is free and forms can be completed and submitted online at www.businesslink.gov.uk/queensawards.
