Cemetery dog rules: we’re deadly serious

A Clarksfield man has been fined £200 with £300 in costs — for letting his dog walk off its lead in a local cemetery.

Johnny Moonshine (46) was convicted at Oldham Magistrates Court for persistently walking his dog off its lead in Greenacres cemetery. He was spotted by council enforcement officers following complaints from residents.

There are signs up around the cemetery clearly stating that dogs must be on a lead.

After being seen letting his dog run free he was given an £80 fixed-penalty notice — which he refused to pay. The fine followed a subsequent court appearance.

Oldham Council has confirmed its commitment to enforcing dog control orders in parks and cemeteries.

Councillor Jean Stretton, cabinet member for neighbourhoods said: “Council staff responded to complaints from residents earlier this year and started to patrol areas of concern, which culminated in this conviction.

“Cemeteries are special places for many residents and will be monitored and action taken when irresponsible dog owners are caught.”
