The search has begun to find the Woman of Oldham 2011.

The 19th Woman of Oldham luncheon takes place at the White Hart Hotel, Lydgate, on Wednesday, September 21. The winner, who must live, work or volunteer in Oldham, will receive the Oldham Evening Chronicle crystal bowl.

Last year’s winner was Anne Sykes, chosen for her exhausting record of voluntary work.

She will hand over the title at the luncheon to a woman who is nominated in the next few weeks, and deemed by judges to be worthy of the accolade.

Urging people to submit the names of special women for the award, Clare Weston, chairman of the Woman of Oldham Committee, said: “We know that there are many unsung heroines within the Oldham population in all walks of life.

“We would be delighted to hear about them. If someone you know fits that description and you would like to see them receive some recognition for their good work, please contact us with a view to nominating them.”

Last year’s charity luncheon and fundraising events run by the committee throughout the year raised £8,500 for Oldham Mountain Rescue. Money raised this year will go to the In Your Hands appeal, which supports the £44million Women and Children’s Unit currently under construction at the Royal Oldham Hospital.

The Woman of Oldham Committee has raised more than £80,000 to support local causes and charities since it was formed, as well as highlighting the good work carried out by local women over the years.

For a nomination form, contact Janet Larton, on 0161-652 8878.

Closing date for nominations is August 31.
