A FORMER world champion wrestler is throwing a charity bash — but needs some heavyweights to help him out.

Marty Jones, landlord of the Angel Inn, Royton, trained at the former Failsworth Amateur Boxing and Wrestling Club and has already grappled in a few of his old wrestling pals to join in the reunion and funday.

Ex-European champion Jackie Robinson and British champion Brian Sellers, who now runs Sellers Engineering Ltd in Hollinwood, have already signed up.

But it is hoped some famous faces including WWE wrestler Lord Regal might also make an appearance, along with some of Marty’s former fighting opponents who also frequented the Failsworth gym, including popular Oldhamer Johnny Saint and others who regularly starred in ITV’s “World of Sport” wrestling broadcasts in the 1970s and 80s.

Marty said: “Back in its day the amateur club was an institution.

“In the first year I won a medal there were seven British champions from 11 weight categories — that’s incredible. There was only a sad-looking mat and a nail to hang your kit in there but everyone knew the club.

“I really want to see as many of my old mates as possible — and anyone else who wrestled at the club — down here to put some clout behind this fundraising day.

“I want to see loads of the famous wrestlers here including Fit Finlay and Skull Murphy.”

The event will also include a classic car show competition, an auction, raffle, barbecue and an appearance of the Stig of “Top Gear” fame.

Retired boxer Ricky Hatton has donated a framed and signed photo of himself fighting Kostya Tszyu.

All cash raised will go to the Make a Wish Foundation, after an idea for an event by pub regular Susan Wilson.

The funday starts at the Shaw Road venue from 2pm on Sunday, August 28.

If any of the team pictured can attend the event, they can contact Marty on 0161-624 2673.
