Copter surprise

A CHINOOK helicopter caused a stir when it flew low over houses in Royton on Monday evening.
But there was no need to panic: the RAF support aircraft was heading to an awards ceremony at Royton ATC.
Locals watched the helicopter land at the ATC base — without turning off its engines — at 7.10pm.
Former Royton cadet Sgt Steven Jones, from 27 squadron RAF Odiham, had landed in spectacular style to present a special plaque to Royton’s cadets.
Royton ATC committee member Garry Morrissey said: “The presentation of a squadron plaque is a special occasion.
“Steven’s association with Royton ATC goes back a long way — he joined the squadron when he was 13.
“He was a high-achieving cadet and he has carried this on into a successful RAF career.
“The presentation is recognition of this association between 1855 squadron Royton Air Cadets and 27 squadron as well as Steven’s opportunity to give something back to Royton and demonstrate the opportunities if they wish to pursue them that can be available to cadets in the future.”
Steven and his colleagues were on operational duties in the North-West and were given special clearance to land briefly to make the presentation before flying off.
