WORK NOT FLOWING: The River Beal in Shaw is the cause of extended closure for Beal Lane
THE misery for businesses in Shaw continues as Metrolink work causes further delays.
The light at the end of the tunnel for Beal Lane traders is moving further away after the road closure was extended again.
Transport for Greater Manchester revealed more extensive highways refurbishment is needed than initially anticipated.
An investigation discovered repairs are needed to a stone River Beal culvert beneath a large section of Beal Lane.
Now the road will continue to be closed until Monday, September 5.
Director for TfGM, Philip Purdy announced “initial surveys” could not have identified the full extent of the remedial work needed to ensure the road could bear all the traffic, which will include trams.
Mr Purdy said: “Further assessment work has now revealed that the culvert will require a 12-cubic metre concrete cap to strengthen a large section of the road.
“Throughout the process, we have worked very closely with Oldham Council to assess the culvert and co-ordinate the necessary remedial work so the road can be opened again as soon as possible.
“I would like to apologise for any inconvenience this temporary road closure may cause but I can assure everyone this work is essential, not only for Metrolink but for all traffic in this area.”
Once the remedial work is complete, Metrolink contractors will lay tram tracks across the former railway level crossing.
Beauty therapist, Jay Fletcher, who owns Nouvion Nail and Beauty Salon on Beal Lane expressed her “disgust”.
“It makes me wonder if the road will actually be open on September 5.
“I would like to thank my loyal customers for having the patience while the work is going on, but I am not getting any passing trade or new customers.”
