Victims of massacre remembered
Date published: 15 August 2011
Walkers yesterday retraced the steps of Oldhamers involved in the infamous Peterloo Massacre of 1819.
On that infamous historic day, 70,000 people gathered in Manchester to demand reform of Parliamentary representation and 14 were killed — six of them from Oldham — by sabre-wielding cavalrymen sent to clear the crowds.
Yesterday’s commemorative walk, led by Oldham Community Radio, set off from Oldham Civic Centre and moved to St Peter’s Field, formerly G-Mex, now Manchester Central, where a brief ceremony was held.
