Woman kicked and spat at PC

A DRUNKEN mum spat in a police woman’s face after crashing into the back of another car.

Nicola Barnes (32), of Parkfield, Chadderton, had been found sobbing and struggling to stand up following the accident, magistrates in Manchester heard.

But on arrest her tears turned to rage and she refused to take a breath test and tried to kick the officer.

At the police station, Barnes spat on the officer and some of it went into her mouth, said prosecutor Jennifer Baines.

Mother-of-two Barnes was given a suspended six- week prison sentence and banned from driving for two years after admitting charges of assault and failing to provide a specimen.

She was also ordered to pay £85 compensation to the officer and £85 costs.

Miss Baines said the other driver had taken Barnes’s keys after the accident in Victoria Avenue, Blackley, to stop her leaving the scene.

Barnes’s behaviour became so bad in the custody suite officers had to put her in leg restraints, the court was told.

Colin Hopley, defending, said Barnes, who had been in a violent relationship, had psychiatric issues.

“She also has an alcohol problem and she is horrified and appalled about her behaviour”, added Mr Hopley.
