Star grades are just the medicine

MEDICAL marvel Michael Shaw has an appointment with Christ’s College, Cambridge, next month after he scooped 4A*s in his A-level exams.
The 18-year-old North Chadderton sixth form student, from Royton, was successful in maths, chemistry, biology and geology and starts a degree in medicine in September.
He will be following in his older brother Jonathon’s footsteps, who is in his third year of a six-year medical degree at Edinburgh University.
Michael said: “I was hoping for these results but not expecting them.
“I’m not sure what I’ll end up doing but it will definitely be medicine in some form.
“I’ll definitely be having a few drinks to celebrate.”
Proud parents Andrew and Laura Shaw were delighted with their son’s outstanding results.
Mr Shaw said: “We’re very pleased. It has been a really long wait over the summer holidays and a very tense morning but we are delighted for him and he has worked so hard.”
Fellow student Alex Kershaw (18), from Royton, scooped an impressive 3A*s in maths, further maths and ICT.
He starts at the University of Bath next month, studying computer science with mathematics.
He said: “I’ve not decided what I’ll do after university, maybe something like software engineering.
“It was hard work but I was hoping for these results.”
A school spokeswoman said: “North Chadderton’s sixth form is once again extremely proud of its Year 13 students who achieved a 98 per cent pass rate this year in their A-levels.
“A fantastic 10 per cent of our grades were at A*. Students have been successful across more than 25 subjects.
“79 per cent of their passes were at C or above and 54 per cent of passes were at B or above.
“Our students will be studying courses at university in subjects as diverse as business economics, architecture, journalism, psychology, nursing and law.
“Our continuing success is due to the hard work of students and teachers alongside the support of the parents, guardians and governors.”
