BUSINESS is booming at Oldham Library thanks to an ambitious scheme to support local firms.

The “Mint” database helps generate business networks and has proved especially popular for its mailing potential.

The programme was launched in 2010 to support the training and developmental needs of small to medium-sized businesses across the borough.

Two local graduates, Tom Yates and Phil Kelly, who started an online business together, used mailing lists compiled by library staff to reach their target market.

Mr Yates said: “After being made aware of the resources at Oldham Library, we have never looked back — it was amazing.”

A representative from Blue Orchid, which worked in partnership with the library, now runs a weekly drop-in service for people considering starting their own business.

Deana Kearney, from Blue Orchid, said: “It gives us a visibility in the centre of Oldham that promotes the support we can offer to potential and new businesses.”

Oldham Library has hosted presentations from the Oldham Business Network and Owl Marketing, which have been well-attended and received excellent feedback.

The next main event is on September 22 when an employment and skills fair, run in partnership with Job Centre Plus, Next Step, Oldham Lifelong Learning Service and Oldham College, takes place. Members of the public can discover more about local employers and recruitment and training opportunities. There will also be an employability workshop focusing on CV writing and interview techniques.
