Friends in trek tribute to David
Date published: 22 August 2011
AROUND 100 people are to stage a fund-raising walk in memory of popular Shaw man, David Jones.
The 48-year-old father-of-two died in June, only weeks after the diagnosis.
One of his best friends, Ian Gilmour, who lost his brother to cancer last year, suggested the walk idea in his honour. Family and friends have rallied for an eight-mile trek to raise money for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice, where David spent the last week of his life.
Ian took part in a similar fundraising walk for his brother, which took place in his home town of Glasgow, and raised £5,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Ian is now pleading for anyone who knew David to join in the walk for the hospice.
David’s wife, Lynn, who lives in the family home with their children Ben (21) and Lizzie (17), will be taking part, as will Ian’s wife, Gill.
The event starts in Newton Heath, where David was born, on the morning of September 10 and finishes at Crompton Conservative Club.
“Organising the walk has helped to keep all our minds occupied, and we are expecting about 100 people to join us,” said Ian. “It will be a good crowd.
“David was a leader with the scouts, and we want anyone who knew him to come and join us on the walk.”
