LIBERAL-Democrat councillors have demanded an update on the £10million road-repairs programme in Oldham.
Implemented under Lib-Dem control last year, the scheme was meant to target some of the borough’s most damaged footpaths and highways.
Yet only a year in, councillors say it has been plagued with delays and they have been left in the dark as to the scheme’s progress.
Councillor Jackie Stanton has written to Elaine McLean, executive director for economy, place and skills, raising concerns about what she describes as the “constant shelving of some schemes and the delays to completion of others”.
Councillor Val Sedgwick said: “I have been promised that Spring Lane in Lees would be resurfaced in June, then July, then August and now maybe September.
“We have lost the summer months and if cold weather sets in then there may be yet more delays.”
Work started last November in various wards across the borough, with a budget of £1.5 million set for the first year’s spend.
The plan was to spend a further £3 million in years two and three and £2.5 million in the final year. This is now under review.
Councillor Jean Stretton, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “This is a four-year programme of investment aimed at improving roads across the borough. The year-one programme is continuing as planned and the year two programme is currently under review.
“This is to ensure that investment is maximised to reduce the potential for future accidents and trips resulting in claims against the council and ensure the most effective use of limited funds.”
